OTT Parsivel is a modern, laser-based optical system for measuring all
types of precipitation completely and reliably.
The transmitter unit of the sensor generates a flat, horizontal beam of
light, which the receiver converts into an electrical signal. The signal
changes whenever a hydrometeor falls through the beam anywhere within
the measurement area. The degree of dimming is a measure of the size of
the hydrometeor, and together with the duration of the signal, the fall
velocity can be derived.
Features:
- Patented extinction measurement technique directly measures size and
velocity of each single hydrometeor, then derives size spectrum, amount
of rainfall, equivalent radar reflectivity, visibility, kinetic energy,
and precipitation type
- Simultaneous measurement of all types of precipitation at any wind
condition even hurricane force winds
- Remote data access capability for data gathering and configuration
- Fully operable in arctic, desert, or tropic climates
- Special measuring head prevents secondary spectra caused by drops
splashing on the sensor head
Benefits:
- Perform maintenance free measurements of distribution, composition,
and amount of precipitation regardless of intensity, duration, or type
of precipitation
- Classify present weather and types of precipitation in accordance
with the weather code established by the WMO
- Integrated precipitation measurement, hydrometeor composition, and
atmospheric visibility are perfect for monitoring and predicting road
conditions
- Combine with water level sensors and drainage modeling to create a
high-performance, regional high water early warning system
